The resin of the high rocks

In the thin air above Leh, the summer sun warms bare cliffs until a dark resin seeps from their cracks.

Made by the mountain

Shilajit forms over very long periods, as plant matter trapped in rock slowly breaks down under heat and pressure. In Ladakh's short summer, when the cliffs warm up, it oozes out of cracks as a sticky, tar-dark substance.

Collectors know the seams. They climb to them in the summer months and scrape the resin from the rock by hand.

Raw is not ready

Straight off the rock, shilajit carries soil, grit and stone. Before it can be eaten it has to be cleaned. It is dissolved in water, filtered, and slowly reduced, traditionally under the sun, until it sets into a smooth, glossy resin.

We only sell purified shilajit. Never raw.

An old remedy of the Himalaya

Shilajit has long been part of Ayurveda, and of Sowa-Rigpa, the Amchi medicine practised in Ladakh, where it is counted among the rejuvenating substances.

We share that history, not medical promises. If you are pregnant, take medication or have a health condition, speak to your doctor before using it.

The mountain takes centuries to make it. The sun takes weeks to finish it.

How good resin behaves

Purified shilajit hardens in the cold and softens in warm fingers. A small piece should dissolve completely in warm water without leaving grit.
